Del Mar Closes With Palomar Handicap

Del Mar

Today marks the end of summer for racing fans. First, Saratoga closed on Labor Day. Today, the other summer racing place closes as the turf meets the surf for the final time in 2009 today at Del Mar. On Friday, racing in Southern California moves to the small meet that is the Los Angeles County Fair at Fairplex Park while racing in New York moves back to the city and the start of Belmont Park's Fall Championship meet. Before that, there is one more graded race of the summer season.

The $200,000 Grade 2 Palomar Handicap is the closing day feature today at Del Mar. The race is carded for fillies and mares three years old and upward and will be run at 1 1/16 miles over the Jimmy Durante turf course. A field of ten will contest the race.
